WESTFIELD FUN DAY

Westhill Recreation ground, Westhill Road, Westfield, Radstock, BA3 3TE

SUNDAY 7th JUNE 2015

Gates opened at 12pm til 4pm

A beautiful sunny afternoon brought hundreds of residents to the Westfield fun day. There was plenty of entertainment which included music from Norton Radstock Silver Band, a Tae Kwondo demonstration with the Jamie Woodland Black Belt Academy, amazing dance routines by the Susan Hill School of Dance, Zumba demonstration and the very cute Stardust majorettes. There was an uplifting display by Mendip All Drummers and we saw the Return of Spider Man plus an opportunity to meet the Ninja Turtles and Olaf from Frozen.

The Radstock and Westfield Big Local tent was in prime position by the main gates, ensuring we were able to make contact with residents as they entered and left the event. We encouraged young and old to plant the seeds of change, (a sunflower seed in a plant pot with a Big Local sticker on the front, 47 were planted in total). Whilst the residents were filling their pots we encouraged them to voice their views on what they would like to see the Big Local money spent on. Examples of discussions were: Litter picking; after school clubs for younger children (3-5 year old boys in particular); more youth work; dentist; fewer houses being built; move the temporary bus stop in Radstock away from junction; more free play with WPA and Play Bus; more community organisations; filling in the pot holes; sorting out the roundabout in Radstock to reduce traffic congestion up into Westfield; more flowers and more fun; an area for children free from dog mess perhaps with security cameras to persecute those who fail to pick up their own mess; more bins; wheelie bins provision to reduce litter on the streets from spilt bin bags; another super market to compete with the Co-op. Once they had planted the seeds of change they were offered a Big Local “I love my area” badge and a biscuit plus a “what is the Big Local leaflet with our website address on the back.
