SWAN have recently been in touch to let us know about their food project that we recently provided some funds towards:
The aim of this project was to purchase a stock of ‘ambient food’ for the Radstock Food Club, to enable our members to be provided with useful food items that are not included in the main provision of food we receive from FareShare each week (which is mainly fruit, vegetables and meat). Such ambient items included pasta, rice, tinned sweetcorn, baked beans, pasta-bake sauces, pesto and cereal – i.e. items that members could keep in their cupboards and use to provide balanced meals for their families, alongside the fresh food already provided in their weekly food parcels.
Our members are families and individuals from low-income households, living within 15 miles of Radstock. We currently have 76 households registered as members, including 134 adults and 83 children under the age of 18 (total of 217 people). We have the resources to feed approximately 30 households each week. Some families use our support every week, others use us on an ad hoc basis, when times are toughest.
This grant allowed us to buy a substantial amount of these ambient items (between 10 and 60 of each item), providing a solid stock for our members for the immediate months ahead.
The feedback we have received so far for the inclusion of these items has been extremely positive, and we are so grateful to Big Local for the opportunity to improve our weekly food provision in this way.
